Solid State Coordination Chemistry and Supramolecular Assemblies of (II)/Benzilato/2,2'Dipyridylamine Systems

Two new mixed-ligand complexes of benzilato (bz) and 2,2’-dipyridylamine (dipyam), 1 [Ni(bz)(dipyam)2](bz)·2MeOH and 2 [Cu(bz)₂(dipyam)]·EtOH, have been synthesized by refluxing benzilic acid and 2,2’-dipyridylamine with nickel(II) acetate for 1 and copper(II)carbonate hydroxide for 2. The new compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR and electronic absorption spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, thermogravimetric analysis and singlecrystal X-ray diffraction. The role of non-covalent interactions, such as hydrogen bonds, π···π and/or C-H···π, in the creation of supramolecular assemblies is analyzed.
